Investigate This: for parents
The short version: Investigate This is a Chrome extension that coaches your middle or high schooler right before they send a message to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. It runs on your child's computer. What they type is never sent to us, stored, or shared with you.
What it checks for
- Questions that get AI to just agree, like "isn't my essay great?"
- Asking AI to do a whole assignment instead of helping them learn.
- Personal information, like a phone number, address or full name.
- Bullying: asking AI to write something mean, false or private about someone else.
- Signs a student might hurt themselves. These get a support card (below) instead of a coaching pop-up.
When it finds one, a short pop-up suggests a better way to ask. Your child can fix the message or send it anyway. Nothing is ever blocked.
The support card
If a message sounds like your child might hurt themselves or is thinking about dying, a calm card appears instead of the usual pop-up. It says they're not in trouble and don't have to handle this alone, and it shows:
- a free crisis line for your country: 988 in the US, 1582 Te Escucha in Guatemala, or findahelpline.com anywhere else
- the emergency number for your country
- a suggestion to talk to an adult they trust, like family, a teacher or a counselor
Your child can go back, or send their message to the AI as they wrote it.
It does not notify you. Investigate This never alerts parents, schools or anyone else, and it keeps no record of what your child typed or which pop-ups they saw. We designed it this way on purpose: students are more honest, and more likely to reach out, when they know they aren't being watched. It is a nudge toward help in the moment, not monitoring.
How well it works
We tested it on 400 new messages written to sound like real students, in English and Spanish:
- About 5 in 6 messages that showed someone might be at risk got the support card. It misses some, most often when the worry is hinted at rather than said.
- About 1 in 20 ordinary messages got the card when they didn't need it, for example "this song slaps, I could die".
- About 3 in 4 bullying requests got the bullying pop-up.
Please don't rely on it to tell you whether your child is okay. No message getting a card doesn't mean everything is fine. If you're worried about your child, these lines help parents too: call or text 988 in the US, or message 1582 Te Escucha on WhatsApp at 3007-1582 in Guatemala.
Talk with your child about it
We suggest telling your child that it's installed and what it does, including that it doesn't report anything to you. Students trust a tool more when they know how it works.
Privacy
The only thing the extension sends is the activation code you type in, to check your subscription about once a day. It never sends what your child types. Read the full privacy policy.

No te avisa.
