Investigate This: Privacy Policy
Effective November 3, 2026 ยท Investigate This is made by Skeptic.
The short version: Investigate This checks your AI prompts on your own computer. We never see, collect, send, sell or save what you type.
What the extension does
Investigate This is a Chrome extension that coaches students before they send a prompt to an AI chatbot (Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude). It looks for questions that get AI to just agree with you, asking AI to do a whole assignment, personal information such as phone numbers or addresses, and requests to write something mean, false or private about someone else. When it finds one, a pop-up suggests a better way to ask.
If a message sounds like the student might hurt themselves, a support card shows a free crisis line, the local emergency number and a suggestion to talk to a trusted adult. The crisis line is chosen from the computer's time zone setting, on the device. The card never blocks the message, and nobody is notified: not Skeptic, not parents, not the school.
What happens to what you type
- The extension reads the text in the chatbot's prompt box only when you press Send, so it can check it.
- That check runs entirely inside your browser, on your device.
- Your prompt text is never sent to Skeptic or anyone else by the extension, and it is never stored. When you send a prompt, it goes to the AI company the same way it would without the extension, under that company's own privacy policy.
What we collect
Nothing about the student and nothing they type. The extension has no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no tracking and no ads. It doesn't use cookies.
The only thing the extension ever sends is the activation code a parent types in (like ABCD-EFGH-JKMN). It sends that code to Skeptic's server to check that the subscription is active, at most about once a day. The server answers yes or no and the trial or billing dates. The code doesn't identify the student, and nothing else is sent with it. The extension saves that answer on the computer so it keeps working offline for up to 7 days.
Settings a school or parent can set
A school or parent who manages a Chrome browser can turn the extension off, turn it off for one site, set the school's activation code, or set the crisis lines shown on the support card, through Chrome's managed settings. The extension reads those settings. They contain no information about the student.
Subscriptions and payments
This section is about the subscription a parent buys on skepticlearn.org, not the extension.
- Stripe handles checkout and billing. The parent's name, email, billing address and card are entered on Stripe's page and kept by Stripe under Stripe's privacy policy. Skeptic never sees the card number.
- Resend delivers the email with your activation code. It receives the email address it sends to.
- Skeptic's own server keeps one record per activation code: whether the subscription is active and its trial and billing dates. It doesn't store names, email addresses or anything about a student, and it doesn't keep request logs.
Children
Investigate This is built for middle and high school students. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children under 13.
Sharing and selling
We don't sell, share or transfer any user data, because we don't collect any. We don't use or transfer data for advertising, credit decisions or any purpose unrelated to the extension's single purpose.
Changes
If a future version ever needs to collect any data, we will update this policy before that version is released, explain exactly what and why, and ask for permission where the law or Chrome requires it.
